This advertisement was printed by John Grieve for circulation within Haddington. It is cast a narrative poem listing many of the product lines stocked at Samuel Smiles China, Glass and Paper Warehouse.

This is a printed flyer or small poster printed on one side with stanzas of verse in a decorative border. The verses list many of the articles retailed by SAMUEL SMILES CHINA, GLASS & PAPER WAREHOUSE, HIGH STREET, HADDINGTON but note that ‘to enumerate all in a shop-bill/ Would be a botheration’.

Samuel Smiles was at first a paper maker and subsequently a general merchant in Haddington. He died there of cholera in 1832, leaving 11 children one of whom, also called Samuel, went on to become a favourite Victorian biographer and author.
